What is Watch time?
Watch time is the total number of minutes or hours people spent watching your videos, added together across everyone. It is a volume number, not a quality number: 1,000 people watching one minute each and 100 people watching ten minutes each both produce the same total. YouTube treats it as one of the most important signals it has, because minutes watched is what the platform sells to advertisers. It is also the number used for Partner Program eligibility, where YouTube publicly requires 4,000 valid public watch hours in the previous twelve months alongside 1,000 subscribers. Watch time only accumulates from public videos — unlisted, private and deleted content stops counting.
