What is Average view duration?
Average view duration is total watch time divided by total views, expressed as a length of time — four minutes eleven seconds, say. It answers one question: how long does a typical person stay? Because it is measured in minutes rather than percentages, it is not comparable between videos of different lengths. Two minutes on a three-minute video is excellent; two minutes on a twenty-minute video means almost everyone left. YouTube shows it alongside average percentage viewed for exactly that reason, and the pair together is far more useful than either alone. It is also the number you multiply by views to estimate how much watch time a new video will bank.
What does Average view duration mean for a business in Pakistan?
Urdu-language explainers in Pakistan tend to run long because the audience wants the whole file explained — how to get an NADRA correction, what documents a bank asks for. A six-minute average on a fourteen-minute video is common and healthy here. English tech content aimed at the same city usually holds shorter, because those viewers are comparing you to global channels.
A worked example
A Saddar mobile-repair channel posts a 9-minute screen-replacement video. 4,100 views produce 12,300 minutes of watch time, so average view duration is 3 minutes exactly — 33 percent of the video, which is respectable for a tutorial people skip through.
