What is Retention?
Retention is the percentage of a video still being watched at any given point. It is the shape of your audience leaving. Absolute retention starts at 100 percent and only falls; relative retention compares you against other videos of similar length on the platform. Retention is the single most diagnostic number a creator has, because it points at a moment rather than a feeling — you can see the exact second where people stopped. Platforms rank partly on it because it predicts whether a new viewer will stay, and a video that holds people is worth more distribution than one that gets clicked and abandoned. Improving retention almost always means cutting, not adding.
What does Retention mean for a business in Pakistan?
Two very Pakistani retention killers show up constantly in audits: a fifteen-second intro animation someone paid PKR 3,000 for in 2021, and thirty seconds of salaam, subscribe requests and dua before the topic starts. Both are cultural politeness that the graph punishes. Say the thing first, greet people at second forty, and the same footage holds twice as many viewers.
A worked example
A Rawalpindi tuition centre's chemistry video holds 62 percent at 30 seconds. After cutting a 14-second animated logo, the next video holds 81 percent at 30 seconds and average view duration rises from 2:10 to 3:05 on the same length of content.
