What is Hook?

The hook is the first one to three seconds of a video — the words, the image and the on-screen text that decide whether a person keeps watching or swipes. It is the part of a short video that changes the outcome most, because everything after it only exists for the people the hook kept. A working hook does one of a few things: it states a specific claim, it asks the exact question the viewer has, it shows the end result first, or it starts mid-action so there is nothing to wait through. Hooks fail for predictable reasons: a greeting, a logo animation, a slow pan, or an opening line that could belong to any video.

What does Hook mean for a business in Pakistan?

Roman Urdu hooks routinely outperform English ones in the twin cities, because they sound like a person rather than an advertisement. 'Islamabad mein 5 marla ka rate kya chal raha hai' holds far better than 'Let us discuss property trends'. Put a number in it. And cut the salaam — greet people after the hook has done its job, not before.

A worked example

A G-13 tuition centre tests two openings on the same lesson. 'Assalam-o-alaikum, aaj hum parhenge...' holds 38 percent at three seconds. 'Ye ek sawal har saal board mein aata hai' holds 71 percent, and the video ends with 4.5 times the views of the first version.

These come up in the same conversations and are worth reading together.
