What is Nofollow link?
A nofollow link is a link carrying the rel="nofollow" attribute, which tells search engines the site is not vouching for the page it links to. Google later added two siblings: rel="sponsored" for paid or advertising links and rel="ugc" for links in comments and forums. All three are treated as hints rather than strict rules, so a nofollow link can still be noticed, but it generally passes little or no ranking credit. Most links from social profiles, directories that sell placements and comment sections are nofollow, which is why a pile of them does not lift rankings much on its own.
What does Nofollow link mean for a business in Pakistan?
Pakistani sellers of SEO packages sometimes count hundreds of profile and comment links as backlinks in a monthly report. Most of those are nofollow and do little for rankings. They still have a place: a Facebook page, a LinkedIn company page and a listing on a Pakistani directory can send real visitors and help Google connect the business across the web.
A worked example
A Gulberg Greens wedding venue gets a feature in an online Islamabad lifestyle magazine. The magazine marks the link sponsored because the venue paid for the article. It passes little ranking credit, but over a wedding season it sends 150 visitors who were already reading about venues, which is the reason the venue bought it in the first place.
