What is CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)?
Cumulative Layout Shift, or CLS, measures how much the visible content of a page jumps around unexpectedly while it loads and while someone uses it. It is the reason you sometimes go to tap a button and hit an ad that just pushed it down. The score combines how much of the screen moved and how far; Google counts below 0.1 as good. The usual causes are images and embeds without set width and height, ads and banners injected above content, and web fonts that swap in at a different size. Fixing it usually means reserving space before things arrive.
What does CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) mean for a business in Pakistan?
News and classifieds sites popular in Pakistan are known for this, with ad slots that load late and shove the article down. Business sites get it from WhatsApp and announcement bars that appear a second after load. On a slow connection the jump is bigger, and an accidental tap can send a visitor somewhere they never meant to go.
A worked example
An Islamabad clinic's site shows a promotional banner a second after load, pushing the Book appointment button down by 90 pixels just as visitors reach for it. CLS reads 0.24. Reserving the banner's space in the layout from the first moment, and setting dimensions on the doctor photos, brings it to 0.03.
