What is INP (Interaction to Next Paint)?
Interaction to Next Paint, or INP, measures how long a page takes to visibly respond after someone taps, clicks or types. It looks at interactions across the whole visit and reports one of the slowest, so a single sluggish menu or add-to-cart button can drag it down. Google counts 200 milliseconds or less as good. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Poor INP is almost always caused by heavy JavaScript keeping the phone's processor busy, often from chat widgets, tracking scripts, page builders and sliders.
What does INP (Interaction to Next Paint) mean for a business in Pakistan?
Lower-end Android phones common in Pakistan have slow processors, so heavy scripts that a flagship phone shrugs off can freeze a page for a second or more. Sites that load a chat widget, several tracking pixels and a page builder at once are the usual offenders among twin-city business websites.
A worked example
A Blue Area travel agency's booking form freezes for about 600 milliseconds when someone taps the date picker on a budget phone. The page loads a live chat widget, three tracking scripts and a heavy calendar library. Delaying the chat widget until after a tap and swapping the calendar for the phone's built-in date input brings INP under 200 milliseconds.
