YouTube click-through rate benchmarks

YouTube's own help pages state that half of all channels and videos sit between 2 and 10 percent impressions click-through rate. We treat 4 to 6 percent as fine for a Pakistani channel, and anything under 2 percent as a thumbnail and title problem worth fixing first.

The numbers

How to read your impressions click-through rate
CTRWhat it usually meansWhat we do about it
Under 2%The thumbnail and title are not making a promiseRewrite both together; new thumbnail within 48 hours
2 – 4%Working, but the packaging is genericTest a face, fewer words, higher contrast
4 – 6%Healthy for most Pakistani channelsLeave it alone; work on retention instead
6 – 10%Strong packagingStudy which of your own videos did this and repeat it
Over 12% at low impressionsUsually your subscribers onlyDo not celebrate until impressions scale

YouTube publishes the 2–10% band as covering half of all channels and videos. The rest of this table is our own working rule, not YouTube's.

What these numbers actually mean

A falling CTR on a growing channel is often good. When YouTube starts showing your video on the home pages of people who have never heard of you, the denominator explodes and the percentage drops while the actual views rise. Look at impressions and views together before you panic. The bad version is CTR falling while impressions stay flat — that means the same people are seeing you and choosing not to click, which is a packaging problem.

Fix the title and thumbnail as one job, never separately. The image should make a viewer curious and the title should tell them what the curiosity is about, and if both say the same thing you have used one slot twice. For Pakistani channels there is a specific trap: a title in English over a thumbnail with Urdu text confuses the promise. Pick a language per video and stay in it, including in the on-screen text of the first three seconds.

Changing the thumbnail after upload is allowed and often worth it. If a video has real impressions but a CTR under 2 percent after 48 hours, we swap the thumbnail and rewrite the title, then watch for a week. YouTube keeps serving the video and the new packaging gets a fresh test. What does not work is changing it four times in three days — you leave no clean period to judge, and you cannot learn anything from that.

Is advertising budget included in any of these prices?

No. Wherever a management or service fee is quoted here, ad spend is separate and paid directly to the platform. We never mark up an ad budget and neither should anyone else.
