Watch Hours Calculator: How Far Are You From 4,000?

Work out how many watch hours your videos are generating each month and how long the remaining gap to 4,000 will take. It also checks the Shorts route, because a lot of Pakistani channels chase Shorts views for months without realising those views count towards a completely different threshold.

Work it out

Your numbers

Views on normal videos only. Shorts go in the field below and are counted separately.

YouTube Studio shows this under Audience retention. Two to four minutes is normal for a 10-minute Urdu video.

These do not add to your 4,000 hours. They count towards the separate 10 million in 90 days route.

The rolling 12-month figure from the monetisation card in YouTube Studio.

Result

Watch hours earned per month
550hours

What your current long-form output generates in a normal month.

Hours still needed
3,100hours

The gap between where you are and 4,000.

Months to 4,000 hours
6months

At the current pace, ignoring the fact that older videos keep earning.

Progress to 4,000 hours
23%

How far through the requirement you already are.

Progress on the Shorts route
1.8%

Your last 90 days of Shorts views as a share of the 10 million needed.

Long-form views needed per month to finish in 6 months
11,273views

A target you can plan content around instead of waiting.

How this is calculated

watchHoursPerMonth = (monthlyLongFormViews × avgViewDurationSeconds) ÷ 3,600, rounded to the nearest whole hour. hoursRemaining = maximum of 0 and (4,000 − currentWatchHours). monthsTo4000 = ceiling(hoursRemaining ÷ watchHoursPerMonth); if hoursRemaining is 0, show "already there"; if watchHoursPerMonth is 0, show "not moving at this pace". percentComplete = (currentWatchHours ÷ 4,000) × 100, capped at 100, to one decimal place. shortsRouteProgress = ((monthlyShortsViews × 3) ÷ 10,000,000) × 100, capped at 100, to one decimal place — the ×3 turns a monthly figure into the rolling 90-day window YouTube measures. viewsNeededPerMonth = ceiling((hoursRemaining ÷ 6) × 3,600 ÷ avgViewDurationSeconds); if hoursRemaining is 0, show 0.

Things to keep in mind

  • Only public long-form watch time counts. Private videos, unlisted videos, deleted videos and Shorts are all excluded, and the 4,000 hours must sit inside a rolling twelve-month window — so hours earned thirteen months ago quietly drop off.
  • The projection ignores your back catalogue, which usually keeps earning. In practice most channels reach 4,000 slightly faster than this shows, because old videos carry on being watched while you publish new ones.
  • Average view duration is worth more than views here. Doubling retention from 90 seconds to 180 does exactly what doubling your views would, and it is usually the easier of the two.
  • The Shorts route needs 10 million valid public Shorts views inside 90 days, alongside 1,000 subscribers. It is a real route but a demanding one — most Pakistani channels get there on watch hours instead.

About this calculator

Do Shorts count towards the 4,000 watch hours?

No, and this catches out a lot of people. Shorts have their own separate route — 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days — while the 4,000 hours can only be earned from ordinary long-form videos. A channel with 2 million Shorts views and no long-form content is not close to either.

How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?

It depends entirely on how long people watch. At three minutes average view duration you need 80,000 views; at ninety seconds you need 160,000 for the same 4,000 hours. That is why lengthening the videos people already finish beats chasing new viewers.

Can I lose watch hours I have already earned?

Yes. The 4,000 hours are measured over a rolling twelve months, so hours earned more than a year ago fall out of the window. A channel that goes quiet for six months can genuinely watch its progress bar shrink, which is the strongest argument for steady posting there is.

Should I make longer videos just to get monetised faster?

Only if people will watch them. A 20-minute video that loses everyone at minute two earns fewer hours than an 8-minute video people finish. Look at your retention graph first: if the line is still high where the video ends, that is your signal to go longer.
