Reels vs Long-Form: Which Is Worth Your Hours?

Compare what an hour spent on short vertical video returns against an hour spent on long-form YouTube, in both views and rupees. Short video wins on reach almost every time and loses badly on revenue per view, and this puts actual numbers on that trade instead of opinions.

Work it out

Your numbers

Reels, TikToks or Shorts — all the same production job.

Idea, filming, editing, caption and upload. Fifty minutes is typical for someone comfortable with CapCut.

Median, not your best one. One viral clip makes the average lie to you.

The Shorts pool pays roughly PKR 10–20 per 1,000 views for a Pakistani audience. Instagram and TikTok pay nothing directly here — set to 0 if that is your platform.

Normal YouTube videos of 8 minutes or more.

Script, film, edit, thumbnail, title and upload. Four hours is normal for a 10-minute video.

Take the median of your last ten videos, from YouTube Studio.

PKR 80–130 covers most Pakistani-audience channels. Tech and finance run three times higher.

Based on 4.3 weeks in a month.

Hours a month on long-form

What this whole content plan costs you in time. Check it against the week you actually have.

Views per hour — short video
4,800views

Reach earned per hour of your life.

Views per hour — long-form
300views

The same measure for long-form.

Verdict
Short video wins on reach, returning 16.0× the views per hour of long-form. Short video wins on revenue, returning 1.8× the PKR per hour of long-form.

Which format wins on reach and which wins on money, stated separately because they usually disagree.

How this is calculated

reelsHoursPerMonth = (reelsPerWeek × minutesPerReel × 4.3) ÷ 60, to one decimal place. longFormHoursPerMonth = (longFormPerWeek × minutesPerLongForm × 4.3) ÷ 60, to one decimal place. totalHoursPerMonth = the two added. reelsViewsPerHour = (viewsPerReel × 60) ÷ minutesPerReel, rounded to the nearest whole view; longFormViewsPerHour = (viewsPerLongForm × 60) ÷ minutesPerLongForm. reelsPkrPerHour = (reelsViewsPerHour ÷ 1,000) × shortsRpmPkr, rounded to the nearest rupee; longFormPkrPerHour = (longFormViewsPerHour ÷ 1,000) × longFormRpmPkr. verdict is two sentences: name whichever has the higher views per hour as the reach winner with the multiple between them to one decimal place, and whichever has the higher PKR per hour as the revenue winner with its multiple. If either format has 0 videos per week, say it is not being made rather than declaring it a loser.

Things to keep in mind

  • This compares ad revenue only. Long-form usually wins by more than it shows here, because it is where sponsorship deals, course sales and client enquiries come from — short video builds the audience, long-form converts it.
  • The RPM defaults are ranges we see on Pakistani channels, not published Google figures. If you are monetised, replace both with your own Studio numbers and the comparison becomes genuinely yours.
  • Instagram and TikTok pay Pakistani creators nothing directly for views, so the honest short-form RPM there is zero. Set it to zero and the comparison changes from a debate into an argument for long-form.
  • Views per hour ignores compounding. A YouTube video keeps being found by search for years, while a Reel does most of its work in seventy-two hours — a difference this snapshot cannot show.

About this calculator

Should I stop making long-form videos and just do Reels?

Only if reach is the whole goal. Short video wins comfortably on views per hour, and loses badly on money per hour and on turning viewers into customers. Most creators we work with land on short video for discovery and one long-form video a week for the people who actually buy.

Can I cut long-form videos into Reels and save the time?

Yes, and it is the single best time trade available. One 10-minute video usually contains three to five usable vertical clips, so the incremental cost drops to about fifteen minutes each instead of fifty. The clips perform slightly worse than purpose-shot ones, which is a fair price for that saving.

Why is my PKR per hour so low on both?

Because ad revenue alone rarely pays for a Pakistani creator's time until the channel is large. At 4,000 views a Reel and PKR 12 RPM you are earning under PKR 60 an hour, which is why creators here make money from brand deals, their own services or products — the content is what makes those possible.

Does this work for a business rather than a creator?

Set both RPMs to zero and read only the views-per-hour columns. For a business, views are not the point either — one enquiry from a Reel about your prices is worth more than 50,000 views on a trending audio. Use the ad budget calculator for that side of it.
