What is a shot list, and why does a video shoot need one?

In practice it is a simple table. Each row is one shot: for example, 'wide of entrance from the car park, morning light, for the location Reel', 'owner answers: what should I bring to my first appointment, for a talking-head Short', or 'close-up of the karahi being served, for the menu video and two ads'. Grouping shots by location and by person means the crew sets up once in each place rather than moving back and forth all day.

Shoot time is the expensive and limited part of video. Without a list, people film whatever looks nice, forget the shot the editor needs to join two ideas, and discover the gap a week later when the owner is travelling. With a list, everyone knows when the day is finished, the editor knows what exists, and a single visit can serve Reels, YouTube, ads and the website at once. It also makes approvals faster, because you agree the plan before anyone picks up a camera.

A good shot list stays flexible. When something better appears on the day, such as a regular customer happy to say a few words or the light hitting the shopfront well, it gets added.
