What is a shadowban and is it real?

No platform has a button labelled shadowban. What exists is a recommendation eligibility check: a set of published guidelines describing content the platform will still host but will not push to people who do not follow you. Fall foul of it and your posts keep appearing to your existing followers, which is exactly why it feels invisible and secret. Your follower reach looks roughly normal and your non-follower reach goes to almost nothing.

The triggers are duller than the folklore suggests. Reposting clips with another app's watermark, uploading cricket highlights or film scenes you do not own, health claims stated as fact by an account with no credentials, follow-and-unfollow bursts, engagement pods where the same twelve accounts comment on everything within a minute, and bought followers are the ones we actually find. The banned-hashtag theory that circulates in Pakistani creator groups is mostly wrong — a handful of tags are genuinely restricted, but a hashtag has never been the reason for a serious drop on any account we have audited.

Check it before you accept it. On Instagram, Settings and privacy, then Account Status, states in plain words whether your content is eligible to be recommended and lists any post that caused a problem. TikTok keeps the same information under Account updates in the inbox. YouTube shows strikes and limited-monetisation flags in Studio. If all three screens are clean, you do not have a shadowban — you have a content problem, and that is better news, because you can fix it this week.

Where a restriction is real, recovery is unglamorous: delete or archive the specific flagged post, stop the behaviour that caused it, and post original material for two to three weeks. Nothing resets faster because you deactivated your account for 48 hours, and nothing resets because you paid someone PKR 3,000 on Facebook to remove a shadowban. That service does not exist.
