Why did my reach drop suddenly?
Reach usually drops because your supply changed, not because you were punished. Check three things first: how many posts you published in the last 14 days versus the 14 before, whether one post got unusually low retention, and whether a format you rely on stopped working. Most drops we audit trace back to a posting gap.

The longer answer
Reach is a supply-and-response system. Each new post goes to a small test slice first — a few hundred accounts on Instagram, a first batch of feed impressions on YouTube — and the platform widens the audience only if those people behave well. Post less and there are fewer tests running, so the monthly total falls even though nothing about your account changed. A biryani restaurant on Murree Road came to us certain Instagram had blocked them. They had posted nineteen times during Ramadan and four times in the six weeks after Eid. Reach had not been taken away from them; they had simply stopped asking for it.
The second common cause is a format change nobody noticed. That same page had drifted from short kitchen clips to still photos of the counter, because filming during a fasting month was harder than filming after it. Photos and Reels are ranked by different systems, and a still photo now almost never travels to non-followers. If your post type changed in the same week your reach fell, that is your answer before you look at anything else.
The third is one bad post cooling the next few. Platforms carry a rolling read on your account, so a Reel where only 12 percent of viewers reached three seconds makes the following test batch smaller. It corrects itself inside about a week of normal posting. You can see it in Instagram Insights: open your last ten posts, sort by reach, and look for one collapse followed by a stepped-down line rather than a random scatter.
Read the audience-location panel before you panic. Twin-city accounts regularly pick up cheap reach from trending audio in India or Bangladesh, then look like they crashed when that traffic ends — total reach halves while reach inside Pakistan never moved, and the reach that could actually walk into your shop was never lost. Compare posts published, average retention, and Pakistani reach across the last 14 days against the 14 before. One of those three explains it nearly every time.
The numbers
| What you are seeing | Most likely cause | Where to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Reach fell and posting also fell | Fewer posts means fewer tests running | Your own grid — count posts in the last 14 days against the 14 before |
| Reach fell while posting stayed steady | Format changed: Reels swapped for photos or carousels | Insights, filtered by content type |
| One post collapsed, then everything after stepped down | A single low-retention post cooled the next test batches | Insights, last 10 posts sorted by reach |
| Reach halved but reach inside Pakistan is flat | Foreign audio reach ended — nothing useful was lost | Audience location panel |
| Near-zero reach on every post for over two weeks | A real restriction on recommendation eligibility | Settings, then Account Status on Instagram |
Work down the list in order. Stop at the first row that matches — the causes below it are far rarer.
