Do hashtags still work on Instagram?

The old model is genuinely gone. People used to follow a hashtag and see tagged posts in their feed, and a big tag was therefore a distribution channel you could just walk into. Instagram removed hashtag following, and the recent tab on tag pages went before that. What is left is a classification signal: the tags tell Instagram what your post is about, and Instagram uses that to decide which viewers to test it on. That is worth doing well, and it is not worth thirty tags.

Search is where tags still earn their place. Instagram search now reads your caption text, your on-screen text, your name field and your tags together, so a mobile accessories shop in Saddar that writes iPhone charger price in Rawalpindi in the caption and tags the post with the city gets found by people typing that exact phrase. The tag alone would not do it; the tag plus the words does. This is why we rewrite bios and the name field before we touch anything else on a business page.

Local tags beat big ones every time for a twin-city business. A tag with two million posts puts you in a queue you will never reach the front of. A tag used by a few thousand accounts in Islamabad or Rawalpindi puts you in front of people who could visit you this week. We normally run one niche tag, one format tag, two city or area tags and one brand tag — and the brand tag matters more than people expect, because it is how you find your own reposts later.

One habit to drop: pasting the same tag block onto every post. Instagram reads repeated identical blocks as low-effort, and more importantly it tells the system nothing about what makes this post different from the last. Write the tags after you write the caption, from what the post is actually about.
