How long does it take to build a personal brand on LinkedIn?

A personal brand is really just repeated, recognisable usefulness. The people in your network need to see your name next to sensible ideas several times before they start to associate you with a topic. If you post once a week, that takes a while, and most of the early posts will get modest engagement. That is normal. People often judge LinkedIn by likes in the first month and give up just before it would have started working. The more useful signal is whether the right people — clients, peers, potential hires — begin to mention your posts.

Several things speed it up. A clear topic helps: "tax for freelancers" or "contracts for software houses" is remembered; "business, leadership and life" is not. An existing network helps; a partner at an established Blue Area firm will see faster recognition than someone just starting. Regular commenting on others' posts helps a great deal, because it builds visibility without requiring a post. And a complete profile helps convert attention into conversations, since people check your profile after a post catches their eye.

Measure progress with the right numbers. Profile views from people in your target industries, connection requests from relevant people, comments from clients and peers, and inbound messages about work are better signals than total likes.
