How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?

There are two routes into a ChatGPT answer. The first is the model's training data: text from across the web up to a cutoff date. If your business was written about clearly and often before that date, the model may know it exists. The second is live search. When a question needs current or local information — 'best physiotherapist in F-10', 'who does Shopify SEO in Rawalpindi' — ChatGPT often searches the web, reads several pages, and builds an answer with links to sources. OpenAI says publishers who want to appear in those search answers should allow its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in robots.txt.

In both routes the same qualities help. Clear, specific pages that state what you do, where, for whom and at what kind of price are easier to quote than vague marketing copy. Consistency matters a great deal: if your website says you are in G-11, an old directory says I-8 and your Facebook page lists a different phone number, an assistant has less reason to be confident about you. Third-party evidence counts too — reviews, mentions on local news or trade sites, listings on directories relevant to your field, and 'best of' articles that assistants often read when answering 'who is the best' questions.

What does not work is trying to trick it. Stuffing pages with phrases like 'best agency in Islamabad', publishing fake reviews or creating dozens of thin listicles that rank yourself first are noticed by search engines and, increasingly, by the assistants that rely on them. Answers also vary with how the question is phrased, the user's location, their chat history and the model version, so being named once is not a permanent position. The realistic aim is to be the clearest, best-evidenced option in your niche, so that you are named more often than not.
