Does my small business actually need a chatbot?

Chatbots are sold as if every business needs one. The honest test is simpler. Count your enquiries for a week and note what they were. If you get a handful a day, mostly different questions that need judgement, a person replying with good saved answers is better and cheaper. If you get many a day and most are the same few questions about price, location, timing and availability, a bot can take that load and let staff focus on the conversations that turn into sales.

Timing is the second signal. If a lot of messages arrive at night, when ads run in the evening, or during busy hours when the person who replies is serving customers at the counter, a bot that answers basic questions instantly and books a callback helps. If you already reply within a reasonable time, the bot adds little.

Third, consider what customers are buying. Low-cost, repeat purchases with simple questions, such as food orders, appointments and course enquiries, suit automation. High-trust, high-value decisions, such as property, custom furniture or legal services, usually need a person early, and a bot that delays that contact can cost the sale.

If you are unsure, do the cheap steps first: a complete WhatsApp Business profile, a catalogue, quick replies, an honest away message and labels for following up. Those fix most missed enquiries for a small shop or clinic. Revisit a chatbot when the organised version is still overwhelmed, and you will also have the question list a good bot needs.
