What is the difference between a rule-based chatbot and an AI chatbot?
A rule-based chatbot follows a fixed menu of buttons and keywords you write in advance, so it never says anything unexpected but cannot handle free questions. An AI chatbot reads the customer's own words, including Roman Urdu, and writes an answer from your information. Many good bots for Pakistani businesses combine both approaches.
The longer answer
A rule-based bot is a decision tree. It greets the customer with options such as 'Prices', 'Location', 'Book appointment', and each button leads to a fixed reply or the next set of options. Keyword rules can catch words like 'price' or 'timing'. It is predictable, cheap to run and easy to audit, which is why banks and telecom companies use this style. Its weakness is that people do not type like menus. 'Bhai DHA phase 2 mein delivery hoti hai aur COD hai?' falls through most keyword rules.
An AI chatbot uses a language model to understand what the customer meant and answer in natural language, drawing on the information you give it: services, prices, policies, timings, areas served. It handles spelling mistakes, mixed English and Urdu and questions phrased in unusual ways. The risks are the opposite of a rule-based bot's: it can answer with confidence when it should not, invent a detail if it is not tightly instructed, and its running cost depends on usage.
The best practical setups are hybrids. Buttons handle the common paths quickly, such as booking a slot or getting the location pin, because tapping is faster than typing. The AI layer handles free-text questions, but only from approved information, and it hands the chat to a person when the question is about a complaint, a refund, a medical or legal matter, or anything it cannot answer from its notes.
For a small business, start by listing your ten most common questions. If customers mostly pick from a small set of needs, a rule-based flow is enough. If they write long, varied messages, an AI layer earns its keep.
