What is UGC?
UGC stands for user-generated content: photos, videos and reviews made by customers rather than by a studio. The term now covers two different things. The first is genuine customer content — free, credible and unpredictable, and legally still theirs, so you need permission before you repost it and separate permission before you run it as an ad. The second is paid UGC, where you hire a creator to produce phone-shot footage that looks like a customer's, with no obligation to post it on their own account. You are buying ad creative, not their audience, and it is usually far cheaper than a sponsored post.
What does UGC mean for a business in Pakistan?
WhatsApp is the collection pipeline here. Customers already send unboxing clips, voice notes and photos of the food before they eat it, so ask for them and reward them with something small. Phone-shot footage with an Urdu or Roman Urdu voice-over consistently outperforms polished agency work in twin-city feeds, because it looks like something a cousin forwarded rather than an advertisement.
A worked example
A Rawalpindi home-chef page asks every customer for a ten-second clip and receives 18 in a month. Three go into ads. The best — a customer's hands pulling apart a paratha roll with a Roman Urdu voice note over it — cost nothing to produce and returns messages at PKR 130 each, against PKR 310 for the professionally shot version.
