What is Smart bidding?
Smart bidding is the family of Google Ads bid strategies that set a different bid for every auction using machine learning, rather than a fixed price you type in. The main ones are Maximise Conversions, Target CPA (aim for a set cost per conversion), Maximise Conversion Value and Target ROAS (aim for a set return on spend). The system looks at signals you cannot use manually — the device, location, time, browser, past behaviour — and bids higher when a conversion looks likely. It only works as well as the conversions it is told about. If your tracking counts page views or button taps as conversions, smart bidding will efficiently buy more of the wrong thing.
What does Smart bidding mean for a business in Pakistan?
A common mistake in small Pakistani accounts is a Target CPA strategy optimising towards a conversion that is really just a visit to the contact page. For a Rawalpindi business whose sales actually happen on a phone call or WhatsApp, the call and chat clicks have to be tracked first, or the strategy has nothing real to optimise.
A worked example
Suppose a law firm in Blue Area tracks only real calls over 60 seconds and WhatsApp chat starts. With thirty such conversions a month it switches from manual bidding to Maximise Conversions for six weeks, then sets Target CPA at the average it observed. A firm counting every page load as a conversion would get cheap, meaningless 'results'.
