What is Key event?
A key event is a GA4 event that you have marked as important to the business — the actions that count as success, such as a purchase, a lead form or a WhatsApp tap. Google renamed these from 'conversions' in GA4 in 2024, keeping the word 'conversion' for actions that are counted in Google Ads for bidding. The distinction is useful: you might treat a newsletter signup as a key event for reporting, but only import real enquiries into Google Ads as conversions for smart bidding. Marking too many events as key makes reports meaningless, because everything looks like success. Three to five well-chosen key events is plenty for most small sites.
What does Key event mean for a business in Pakistan?
Twin-city advertisers often import every GA4 key event into Google Ads, including scrolls and page views, and smart bidding then chases cheap scrolls. Importing only actions that lead to a conversation with a real customer keeps automated bidding focused on people who might pay.
A worked example
Suppose an Islamabad architecture firm marks four key events in GA4: portfolio_download, whatsapp_click, call_click and consultation_form. Only call_click and consultation_form are imported into Google Ads as conversions, because those are where projects actually begin.
