What is LLM (large language model)?
A large language model, or LLM, is the kind of AI system behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and similar assistants. It is trained on very large amounts of text to predict and produce language, which lets it answer questions, summarise and write. On its own, an LLM only knows what was in its training data up to a cut-off date. AI search products add a retrieval step: they search the live web, read a handful of pages and write an answer from them, often with citations. That retrieval step is where a business website can still influence what the assistant says.
