What is AI citation?
An AI citation is when an AI answer engine, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews, names or links your page as a source for the answer it gives. It is the AI-search equivalent of ranking. The assistant still writes its own sentence, but it shows where the information came from, and a share of readers click through to check. Pages that get cited tend to answer a question plainly near the top, state facts that can be verified, carry a clear author and date, and agree with what other trusted sources say about the business.
