What is Impressions?
An impression is one appearance of your content on someone's screen. If a thumbnail loads on a person's YouTube home page it is an impression, whether or not they click. If the same person opens YouTube three times that day and your thumbnail appears each time, that is three impressions from one human. So impressions are always equal to or higher than reach, and the gap between the two tells you how many repeat showings the platform is giving you. Impressions are also the number YouTube divides clicks by to produce click-through rate, which is why a video can have a falling CTR while its actual click count rises.
What does Impressions mean for a business in Pakistan?
YouTube counts an impression only when the thumbnail is on screen for a moment and at least half visible, so a channel getting served on 3G-throttled connections around Peshawar Road can show fewer impressions than the same content served in fibre-connected sectors. Do not compare your impression counts to a Karachi channel's without checking whether their audience is on the same kind of connection.
A worked example
An IELTS coaching channel in Blue Area gets 46,000 impressions and 32,000 reach in 28 days. The 14,000 gap is repeat showings, mostly to its own subscribers. CTR is calculated on the 46,000, so 2,300 clicks reads as 5.0 percent.
