Why did my Google traffic drop after redesigning my website?

Redesigns are the single most common cause of sudden traffic loss we see on twin-city business sites. The new site looks better, but behind the scenes the address of every page changed — /services/ac-repair became /what-we-do/air-conditioning — and nobody told Google. Old URLs now return errors, the links other sites gave you point at nothing, and Google has to rediscover everything from scratch. If the old pages ranked, those rankings do not transfer automatically.

Work through the causes in order of likelihood. First, look for a block left over from development: a noindex tag on every page, or a robots.txt line disallowing the whole site, copied from the staging server. This one can make a site disappear in days and is fixed in minutes. Second, list the old URLs — from Search Console's performance report, an old sitemap, or an archived copy of the site — and check what each now returns. Every page that had traffic needs a 301 redirect to its closest new equivalent, not a blanket redirect to the homepage. Third, compare content. If the old service page had eight hundred useful words and the new one has a slogan and a photo, the ranking went with the words.

Then check the less obvious changes. A new theme might load content with JavaScript that Google renders slowly, swap headings for styled text, drop internal links from the footer, change page titles, or add heavy images that slow mobile loading. Each can chip away at rankings. Once fixes are in, resubmit the sitemap and inspect key URLs in Search Console. Recovery usually follows within weeks once redirects and content are restored, though it is not guaranteed. Next time, map every old URL to a new one before launch; it is an afternoon of work that prevents months of loss.
