What is a brand style guide, and does a small business need one?

A useful guide answers the questions people otherwise ask on WhatsApp every week. Which logo version goes on a dark background? What is the exact orange? Which font is for headings and which for prices? How much space should surround the logo on a flyer? Are photos bright and natural or dark and moody? Do we say 'aap' or 'tum' in captions, and do we use English product names? Each answer is a line or two with a visual example beside it.

The guide earns its keep when the work passes between hands. A new staff member making a story in Canva, a printer in Blue Area preparing a banner, a freelancer covering for a month, a signage contractor in I-9: each will improvise if nothing is written down, and within a season the brand starts to drift. One shared PDF in Google Drive prevents most of that.

Keep it short and practical. The thick manuals large companies commission are written for dozens of suppliers; a café or a tuition centre needs perhaps four to eight pages: the logo and its misuses, colours with codes, type, photo style, voice, and a few finished examples such as a post, a story and a menu. Ours is written in plain language and updated when something new is added, rather than filed away and forgotten.
