Why did my old Google Analytics stop working, and what is GA4?

Universal Analytics was built around sessions and page views, a model designed when most browsing happened on desktops and cookies were reliable. Google Analytics 4 is built around events: every interaction, from a page view to a button click or a purchase, is an event with details attached. It works across websites and apps, handles privacy changes better and uses modelling to fill some gaps when data is limited.

The switch was not optional. Google stopped processing new data in standard Universal Analytics properties on 1 July 2023, and the paid 360 version a year later. After that, Google removed access to the old interface and its data. Many small business websites in Pakistan were built years ago with a 'UA-' code pasted into the theme, and nobody noticed when the reports went quiet. If your web developer has moved on, it is worth checking the site's code or Tag Manager for which tag is actually installed.

GA4 looks different and the reports are organised differently, which confuses people used to the old version. Some familiar metrics changed meaning: bounce rate returned in a new form based on engaged sessions, and goals were replaced by key events. Historical data from Universal Analytics did not carry over, so comparisons with years before your GA4 setup are not available inside the tool unless you exported the old data in time.

The practical step is simple: create a GA4 property, install the tag, mark your important actions as key events, and give it a few weeks to collect data. For most small businesses in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the default reports plus a handful of key events answer the questions that matter.
