Should I focus SEO on category pages or product pages?
Usually category pages first. Shoppers tend to search broader phrases like 'bridal lehenga' or 'sofa set Islamabad' that a category answers better than one product. Product pages win for specific searches — a model, a design, a brand item. A Pakistani store needs both, but well-built categories usually carry most of the organic traffic.
The longer answer
Think about how people actually search. Someone in Islamabad planning a wedding types 'bridal lehenga red' or 'mehndi dress for girls', not the product code of a single dress. They want to see options. A category page that collects the relevant products, with filters and some genuinely useful text, matches that intent. A single product page does not, and Google knows it. That is why category pages typically rank for wider, higher-volume searches, while product pages rank for narrow ones.
So the structure of categories is an SEO decision, not just a menu decision. Build categories around what shoppers search for, not your internal stock groups. If people search 'sheesham dining table', a category for that beats one called 'Wooden Furniture Collection 2'. Give each important category a clear title, a short introduction that helps people choose — materials, sizes, delivery, care — and links to related categories. Avoid creating dozens of near-identical categories or tags that split the same products, which spreads ranking signals thin.
Product pages still matter. They are where people decide and buy, and they rank for searches by brand, model, design name or very specific descriptions. They also feed categories with reviews and unique content. The practical order for most stores is to fix the category structure and write the top categories first, then improve product pages for best sellers and high-margin items, then work through the rest. For very small stores with a handful of products, a few strong product pages and one or two categories may be all you need.
