Should I pay influencers or just offer them a free meal or product?

A free meal or product can work with small creators who genuinely want to cover you, but you get no guarantee of a post, its timing or its quality. Paying a fee buys agreed deliverables, deadlines and a paid-partnership label. Many Islamabad restaurants and brands use barter to test creators, then pay the ones who deliver.

The longer answer

Barter is common in the twin cities, especially in food and beauty. A restaurant invites a creator, the meal is on the house, and the creator posts if they enjoyed it. It costs little and can bring honest-feeling content. But it is an informal deal. The creator may post weeks later, post only a story that disappears in a day, or not post at all. They may also review you honestly, which means a bad night in the kitchen becomes public. Barter suits a confident business willing to accept that risk.

A paid collaboration is a business arrangement. You agree in writing what will be posted, on which platform, roughly when, what must be mentioned (location, offer, booking link), and whether you may reuse the video. Payment is usually split, part before and part after the post goes live with the correct paid-partnership label. You gain control over timing — useful for a launch, a Ramadan menu or an Eid collection — and you can hold creators to what was agreed.

Gifted products and free meals given in exchange for a post are still a form of payment in the eyes of the platforms, and in principle should be disclosed as such; a creator who hides a gifted collaboration misleads their audience either way. A sensible approach is to start small: invite a few micro-creators on barter or a modest fee, give each a unique code or link, and see whose audience actually turns up or buys. Then put real budget behind those creators. On our Pro package we run that test-and-scale process; creator fees are always paid separately, directly to the creators.
