Do Shorts hurt long-form views?
Shorts do not cannibalise long-form views, but they convert into them badly. YouTube keeps the two watch-time pools separate, and Shorts views do not count towards the 4,000 hours needed for monetisation. Expect only a small fraction of Shorts viewers to ever click a 12-minute video.
Shorts se long videos ke views kam ho jate hain?
The longer answer
The Shorts feed and the long-form feed are effectively two products sharing a logo. A viewer swiping vertically at midnight is in a different mode from someone browsing the home page for something to watch while they eat. YouTube keeps their watch time in separate pools, reports them separately in Studio, and monetises them through separate routes — 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours for long-form, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days. Neither pours into the other.
So the damage people fear is not the mechanism. What actually happens is a subscriber-quality problem. An auto workshop channel on Peshawar Road went from 400 to 6,000 subscribers in three months on satisfying repair Shorts, then published a 14-minute engine rebuild and got 210 views. Nobody punished them. Their new subscribers had signed up in a feed where the next video arrives with a thumb-flick, and a 14-minute commitment was not what they came for. The channel had grown a number and not an audience.
The fix is to make Shorts that select for the right person. A clip that ends where the interesting part begins, and a pinned comment or an on-screen line pointing at the full video, converts far better than a satisfying loop that resolves completely. We also keep the two connected in subject: if the Shorts are all about brake jobs, the long-form should be about brake jobs, not a channel-update vlog.
For a Pakistani channel there is a real argument for leading with Shorts anyway. Mobile data costs and viewing habits favour vertical video heavily here, and Shorts remain the cheapest way to be discovered at all. Just treat the subscriber count they produce as an audience you still have to earn, and measure success by whether long-form views rise over a quarter — not by the follower number.
The numbers
| Dimension | Shorts | Long-form |
|---|---|---|
| Counts towards 4,000 watch hours | No | Yes |
| Its own monetisation route | 1,000 subs plus 10M Shorts views in 90 days | 1,000 subs plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months |
| Where it is discovered | The vertical Shorts feed | Home, Suggested and Search |
| Typical subscriber intent | Low — a swipe-level decision | High — they chose to spend minutes |
| Best use | Being found for the first time | Being trusted, and being paid |
