What is the difference between a community manager and a social media manager?
A social media manager mainly plans and publishes content and reports on it; a community manager mainly handles the conversations that follow — comments, DMs, reviews and complaints. In small Pakistani businesses one person often does both, which is why replies tend to slip: posting has deadlines, while the inbox quietly piles up.
The longer answer
In larger companies the roles are split. The social media manager owns the calendar, the content, the posting schedule, often the ads, and the monthly report. The community manager owns the relationship with the audience after the post: answering questions, moderating, escalating problems, and spotting what people are saying about the brand. They need different strengths. Content work rewards creativity and planning; community work rewards patience, product knowledge, good judgement and fast, consistent availability during business hours.
In most small businesses in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, both jobs fall to one person — the owner, a family member, a junior staff member, or a freelancer. That is workable, but the risk is predictable. Content has visible deadlines, so it gets done. Replies have no deadline until a customer gives up, so they get done whenever there is time. The result is a page that posts regularly but answers slowly, which is the opposite of what drives sales for a business whose customers ask before buying.
When you hire, be explicit about which job you are paying for. If you hire an agency for social media management, ask whether daily comment and DM replies are included or only posting. If you have a staff member who knows your products well, they may be the right person to answer messages, while an agency handles content. Or you may want both handled outside. Our Starter package covers content and posting; Growth adds daily replies with a reply guide, escalation rules and a shared response log.
