Can ChatGPT reply to my WhatsApp Business customers automatically?

The WhatsApp Business app has only simple automation: a greeting message, an away message and quick replies that a person triggers. It has no official way to let outside software read incoming messages and answer them. Browser extensions and 'WhatsApp AI auto-reply' apps that claim to do it typically work by controlling WhatsApp Web or using modified apps, which WhatsApp treats as unauthorised automation. Numbers using them get restricted or banned, often without warning.

The official route is the WhatsApp Business Platform, or API. You connect your number through a provider, and the provider's chatbot builder, or a small custom service, receives each incoming message, sends it with your business information to an AI model, and posts the reply back. Meta's rules apply: you can reply freely within 24 hours of the customer's last message, and messages you start after that must use approved templates. Meta has also set policies on what general-purpose AI assistants may do on the platform, so a bot should stick to answering about your business.

Connecting a model is the easy part. The work is telling it what it may say: your prices, delivery areas, timings and policies, plus clear limits such as never promising a delivery date, never giving medical advice and handing over to staff for complaints. Without that, a model will fill gaps with plausible guesses, which in sales means wrong prices.

If you only want faster replies, not full automation, a middle step is to use an AI assistant privately to draft answers that staff paste and edit. That keeps a human in every conversation, costs little and needs no API, which is often the right first move for a shop in Saddar or a consultant in Blue Area.
