Can a hacked website lose its Google rankings?

Many owners only discover a hack when a customer mentions that their Google listing shows Japanese text, or that clicking the site sends them to a betting or pharmacy page. Common patterns include the so-called Japanese keyword hack, which creates thousands of spam pages on your domain; injected links hidden in the footer; and conditional redirects that only affect visitors arriving from Google, so the owner browsing directly sees nothing wrong. Search Console's security issues report and messages often confirm what is happening, and Google may show a warning beside your result.

The damage to rankings comes from two directions. Google may demote or label the site to protect searchers, and the spam pages dilute everything else you have built. Visitors who see the warning simply leave. On WordPress sites in Pakistan the entry point is often a pirated theme or plugin, an outdated plugin with a known vulnerability, a weak admin password, or shared hosting where another compromised site spreads to yours.

Cleaning up properly takes several steps. Take a full backup first, then remove the malicious code and files, which may mean reinstalling the core software and every plugin from clean official sources. Change every password — hosting, database, admin users and FTP. Delete spam users. Remove the injected URLs so they return a 404 or 410 response, and check that the sitemap no longer lists them. Then request a review in Search Console, explaining what was fixed. Prevention is cheaper than recovery: licensed themes and plugins only, regular updates, daily backups stored off the server, and two-factor login for every admin. If you are unsure whether a site is clean, ask a developer to check before requesting review, because a failed review delays recovery further.
