What is Usage rights?
Usage rights define what a brand may do with content a creator or photographer has made, beyond the original post. A deal might allow the brand to repost it on its own accounts, use it in paid ads, put it on the website or packaging, or edit it — each for a set period, on set channels, and in set regions. Without agreed rights, paying a creator for a post usually buys only that post on their account, and reusing it elsewhere can lead to takedown requests or claims for payment. Rights are commonly priced separately from the content itself, and wider or longer rights cost more.
What does Usage rights mean for a business in Pakistan?
Pakistani brands commonly assume that paying for a video means owning it, and creators increasingly disagree. A short written agreement, even in a WhatsApp message both sides confirm, listing channels, duration and whether ads are allowed, settles this before money changes hands.
A worked example
Imagine an Islamabad skincare brand that pays a creator for a review video with organic posting only. Three months later it wants to use the clip in Meta ads. Under the original agreement it cannot, so it negotiates a separate fee for six months of paid usage in Pakistan, confirmed in writing.
