What is CDN (content delivery network)?
A content delivery network, or CDN, is a network of servers in many cities that keeps copies of a website's files, such as images, scripts, stylesheets and often whole pages, and serves each visitor from a location near them. That shortens the distance data travels, which cuts loading time, and spreads the load so a traffic spike does not crash the main server. Many CDNs also add security features like protection against attack traffic. Cloudflare, Fastly, Amazon CloudFront and the networks built into hosts like Vercel and Netlify are common examples.
What does CDN (content delivery network) mean for a business in Pakistan?
Pakistani business sites are often hosted on servers in the United States or Europe because that hosting is cheap. Every image then crosses continents to reach a phone in Islamabad. A CDN with nearby locations can make a real difference to load time without moving the site, and many have a free tier suitable for a small business.
A worked example
A Bahria Town real estate site hosted in Texas loads its property photos in about four seconds for visitors in Rawalpindi. Putting the site behind a CDN, with images cached at a nearby location, brings that to around one and a half seconds on repeat visits. The server, the content and the price of hosting stay the same.
