What is Cart abandonment?
Cart abandonment is when a shopper adds products to their cart, sometimes starts the checkout, and then leaves without placing the order. The cart abandonment rate is the share of carts created that never become orders. Some abandonment is unavoidable, since people use carts to compare or save items for later, but a lot of it comes from fixable causes: delivery charges revealed at the last step, forced sign-ups, a slow or broken payment page, missing payment options and doubts about returns. Recovery messages sent to people who left a contact number or email can bring a share of them back.
What does Cart abandonment mean for a business in Pakistan?
For Pakistani stores, the abandoned cart reminder that works best is usually a WhatsApp message sent with the customer's consent rather than an email, since many shoppers rarely check email. The other common trigger here is delivery charges or COD fees appearing only at the final step, which feels like a trick.
A worked example
An Islamabad home décor store sees 400 carts started in a month and 60 orders. It moves the delivery charge onto product pages, removes forced sign-up and sends one WhatsApp reminder an hour after a cart is left, to shoppers who opted in. Hypothetically, if orders rise to 75 from the same 400 carts, abandonment falls from 85% to about 81%.
