What is Captions?
Captions are the on-screen text of what is said, in the same language as the audio, and they exist so a video works with the sound off and for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Good captions mark speaker changes and important non-speech sounds. On YouTube they can be uploaded as a file or auto-generated and then corrected, and the corrected version matters because YouTube reads caption text when deciding what a video is about. Auto-captions on English spoken with a Pakistani accent, or on Urdu-English mixing, are usually wrong enough to need a pass.
What does Captions mean for a business in Pakistan?
Sound-off viewing is the norm here — people scroll in shops, in vans, in shared rooms, and at family gatherings where playing audio would be rude. Videos without captions lose most of that audience inside two seconds. Mixed Urdu-English speech confuses every auto-captioner, so budget ten minutes per video for fixing names, place names and numbers, which is precisely what the machine gets wrong.
A worked example
A nine-minute video's auto-captions come out 88% accurate, which sounds acceptable until you see the errors cluster on Rawalpindi, Easypaisa and every rupee figure in the video. Correcting around 140 words takes 12 minutes and fixes both the reading experience and what YouTube understands the video to be about.
