What is Subtitles?
Subtitles are translated text of the dialogue, written for someone who can hear the audio but does not speak the language. That is the real difference from captions: captions serve people who cannot hear, subtitles serve people who cannot understand. On YouTube you can attach subtitle tracks in several languages to one upload, and viewers choose from the settings menu. Because they are separate text files, subtitles are searchable and translatable without touching the video, and adding a language does not force you to re-export or re-upload anything at all.
What does Subtitles mean for a business in Pakistan?
The pairing that pays here is Urdu speech with English subtitles, because it opens a video to overseas viewers in the Gulf, the UK and North America who have Pakistani parents but read English faster than Urdu script. Overseas audiences also carry a much higher advertising rate than domestic ones, so a single English track can change what a video earns without changing its content.
A worked example
A channel making Urdu business content adds English subtitle tracks to its 15 best-performing videos. Each track takes around 25 minutes to translate and time, so about six hours in total. The videos themselves stay identical; the only change is a settings-menu option that lets a viewer in Dubai or Manchester follow along.
