What is Canonical tag?
A canonical tag is a line in a page's HTML head, written as link rel="canonical", that tells search engines which web address is the main version of that content. It is used when the same page can be reached at several addresses, for example with tracking codes, filters, sort orders or both www and non-www. Google treats the canonical as a strong hint, not an order, and can choose a different version if other signals disagree, such as internal links pointing elsewhere. Every indexable page should normally carry a canonical pointing at its own clean address.
What does Canonical tag mean for a business in Pakistan?
Shopify and WooCommerce stores built for Pakistani sellers generate many duplicate addresses through collections, colour variants and sale filters. The platforms add canonical tags by default, but themes and plugins installed later sometimes break them. A quick check on a few product pages is part of any e-commerce SEO audit we run.
A worked example
A Lahore clothing brand's lawn suit can be reached at /products/lawn-suit, /collections/eid/products/lawn-suit and the same with ?colour=blue. All three carry a canonical tag pointing to /products/lawn-suit. Google indexes that one address and credits it with the links and signals the other two collect.
