What is Brand guidelines?
Brand guidelines, sometimes called a brand book or style guide, are the written rules for how a brand looks and sounds everywhere it appears. A useful set covers the logo and its variations, minimum sizes and clear space, the colour palette with exact codes for screen and print, typefaces and how to use them, photography and illustration style, tone of voice with example phrases, and templates for common items such as social posts and letterheads. Their purpose is consistency when many different people make things — a printer, a freelance designer, a new staff member — so the brand still looks like one business. A short, practical guide that people use beats a long one nobody opens.
What does Brand guidelines mean for a business in Pakistan?
In Pakistan, a brand's signboard, Panaflex banner, visiting card and Instagram posts are usually made by different vendors, often from a WhatsApp screenshot of the logo. Sending each one the same one-page guide with the logo files, colour codes and font names stops the stretched logo and wrong green that creep in otherwise.
A worked example
Suppose an Islamabad café's guide fits on four pages: the logo in full colour, white and black versions; two colours with HEX, RGB and CMYK codes; one heading font and one body font; photo rules such as natural light and no stock images; and three sample captions showing the tone. The sign-maker and the social media designer both work from it.
