Should my business website be built on WordPress or custom coded?

WordPress is not the problem people sometimes make it out to be. It powers a huge share of the web, any developer in Pakistan can work on it, and its editor lets a school office post notices without calling anyone. The trouble is what usually gets piled on top: a heavy multipurpose theme, a page builder, a slider plugin, a form plugin, a security plugin and a backup plugin, each with its own updates. Every one of those is a door that needs closing and a few more files for a phone to download on mobile data.

A custom-coded site, written by hand with a modern framework, ships only what the page needs. There is no plugin list to update every week and far less for an attacker to probe, and pages tend to load quickly even on cheap hosting. The trade-off is editing. You either send changes to the developer or get a small content editor for the parts you change often, such as blog posts, notices or a price list. If your original developer disappears, another competent developer can pick the code up, but the pool is smaller than for WordPress.

A sensible way to decide: count how often you will change things yourself. A news-heavy organisation, a business publishing several articles a week, or a team with a staff member who already knows WordPress is often better served by a carefully built WordPress install with few plugins. A clinic in F-10, a law chamber near the district courts or a showroom on Murree Road that changes a few lines a month is usually better on a coded site.
