What is B-roll, and does my YouTube video need it?

The main recording, usually you talking to camera, is called the A-roll. Everything cut over it is B-roll. When a presenter says "the tiles we used in this kitchen", B-roll is the close-up of the tiles. When a chef says "add the masala now", it is the shot of the masala going into the pan. Without it, the viewer has only a face to look at for ten minutes, and every edit that removes a pause shows up as a visible jump in the picture.

B-roll does three things. It explains, by showing rather than describing. It covers cuts, so an editor can remove a stumble or a repeated sentence without the image jerking. And it resets attention: a change of picture every few seconds gives a phone viewer a reason to keep watching. That last point matters most in the first minute, where many viewers decide whether to stay.

Most businesses already have what B-roll needs and do not film it. A property dealer has the streets, gates and parks of the sector. A clinic has its equipment and waiting area, filmed without patients. A restaurant in Blue Area has its kitchen during prep. Spend ten minutes after each recording filming close, steady, well-lit shots of whatever you talked about, a few seconds each, and send them with the main footage. Avoid stock clips of generic offices or smiling strangers; viewers recognise them, and they say nothing about your business.
