Answered · How to

Should I delete out-of-stock products from my online store?

Not if the item is coming back. Keep the page live, mark it out of stock, show similar products and offer a WhatsApp alert for restocks. If it is gone for good, redirect the page to the closest replacement or its category. Deleting pages carelessly loses rankings and leaves shoppers in Pakistan staring at error pages.

The longer answer

Product pages that have been live for a while may have earned rankings, links and shares. Deleting one throws that away and sends anyone arriving from Google, Instagram or an old WhatsApp forward to an error page. For a fashion or furniture store in Rawalpindi where designs return each season, the better approach is to leave the page up, show clearly that it is out of stock, mark availability accordingly in the product schema, and use the space to show similar items in stock. A 'message us when it is back' button on WhatsApp captures demand you would otherwise lose.

When a product is permanently discontinued, decide by what the page has earned. If there is a direct replacement — a new version of the same chair, the next season's print in the same fabric — redirect the old URL to it with a 301. If there is no close replacement but the page received traffic or links, redirect it to the most relevant category. If the page never got visits and nothing links to it, letting it return a proper 404 or 410 is fine. What to avoid is redirecting every removed product to the homepage; Google often treats those as errors anyway, and shoppers find it confusing.

Keep sitemaps and internal links tidy as products change. Discontinued URLs should drop out of the sitemap, menus and related-product blocks, so Google is not repeatedly sent to pages that no longer exist. Stores with seasonal or limited stock — Eid collections, wedding wear, winter shawls — benefit from planning this upfront: decide for each collection whether pages stay up between seasons or get redirected. That habit protects the rankings a store has built, which matter more each year as a catalogue grows.
