How do I take a good photo for my YouTube thumbnail?

Screenshots from video are usually soft, slightly blurred by motion, and catch you mid-word with an odd expression. A still photo taken on purpose is sharper and lets you choose the exact expression the thumbnail needs. Do it at the end of each recording while the setting, clothes and lighting still match the video. It takes a minute and saves the designer from fighting a poor image.

Light matters more than the phone. Stand facing a window during the day so the light falls evenly on your face, and avoid a bright window behind you, which turns you into a silhouette. Overhead tube lights cast shadows under the eyes; a cheap ring light or a white sheet reflecting window light softens them. Use the rear camera if you have someone to help, since it is usually better than the front one. Hold the phone at eye level and step back so the designer has room to crop and add text.

Know the idea before you shoot. If the thumbnail is about a surprising electricity bill, hold the bill and react to it. If it is about a product, hold it near your face so both read at small size. Exaggerate the expression a little more than feels natural; at thumbnail size, subtle looks blank. Shoot plenty of variations: different angles, with and without the object, looking at the camera and at the object. For business channels where the owner prefers not to appear, photograph hands at work, the product on a clean background, or the location at its best hour.
