What are the Gmail and Yahoo bulk sender rules, and do they apply to me?

Since 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require anyone sending marketing email to authenticate their domain, make unsubscribing easy and keep spam complaints low. Every sender needs SPF or DKIM; bulk senders need SPF, DKIM, DMARC and one-click unsubscribe. A Pakistani business emailing customers from its own domain should meet all of it regardless of size.

The longer answer

Google and Yahoo announced the rules together and began enforcing them in 2024. For all senders to Gmail accounts, Google requires SPF or DKIM authentication, valid forward and reverse DNS for the sending servers, TLS for transmission, and a low spam complaint rate, with Google publishing a threshold of 0.3% as the level not to reach. Senders who send around five thousand or more messages a day to Gmail addresses are treated as bulk senders and must also have SPF and DKIM both passing, a DMARC record on their domain, alignment between the From domain and the authenticated domain, and a one-click unsubscribe header for marketing mail, with unsubscribes honoured within two days.

If you send through a reputable email platform, much of this is handled for you once you complete the domain setup the platform asks for: adding its DKIM records, adjusting your SPF record and publishing a DMARC record at your domain's DNS. The platform also adds the unsubscribe header. What the platform cannot do is fix the From address. Sending marketing email 'from' a free Gmail or Yahoo address through a third-party tool fails alignment, which is why you need an address on your own domain.

A small business in Islamabad sending a few hundred emails a month is nowhere near the bulk threshold, but the honest advice is to meet the bulk rules anyway. Mailbox providers judge reputation by the same signals, and an unauthenticated domain is far more likely to land in spam. DMARC also stops other people sending mail that pretends to be you.

Complaints are the part you control through behaviour. Mail only people who signed up, say clearly at signup what they will receive, and keep the unsubscribe link visible rather than hidden in grey text.
