Does a small business website really need monthly maintenance?

The risk of neglect is real but uneven. WordPress and its plugins are updated often, partly to fix security holes that attackers then scan for automatically across the internet. A site left without updates for a year or two is a common target, and many hacked Pakistani business sites end up redirecting visitors to spam or being flagged by Google as unsafe. A hand-coded site with no admin panel or plugins does not face that same constant pressure, though its hosting and any server software still need attention.

Some maintenance applies to every site regardless of how it was built. Domains and SSL certificates expire, and a missed renewal can take a business offline overnight. Hosting accounts get suspended when a card fails. Information drifts out of date: a phone number changes, a doctor leaves, a branch in Saddar closes, prices go up, and the website still says otherwise. Customers notice wrong information quickly, and Google may show outdated details if your site and Google Business Profile disagree.

So the honest answer is to match the maintenance to the site. If you have a WordPress site with plugins, budget for updates, off-site backups and monitoring, done by someone who tests before updating. If you have a lean coded site, you need far less, mainly renewals, backups and edits. Either way, someone should be responsible for checking the site works every month.
