What is the difference between copywriting and content writing?

The difference is the job the words do. Copy is judged by what the reader does next, such as messaging, calling, booking or buying, so it is short, specific and built around one action. Content is judged by whether the reader learned something and trusts you more, so it can be longer and more detailed, and it is often how people find you through Google or an AI assistant in the first place.

In practice the line blurs. A guide on 'what to check before renting an office in Blue Area' is content, but it should still end by telling the reader how to contact you. A product page on an online store is copy, but it only sells if it answers the buyer's questions as thoroughly as good content would. Captions sit in the middle: some teach, some sell, and a healthy page has both kinds.

When hiring, the label matters less than the skills you need. Someone who writes excellent long guides may struggle with a punchy ad headline, and the reverse is common too.
