Why didn't a caching plugin fix my slow WordPress site?

Caching saves a ready-made copy of each page so the server does not rebuild it from the database for every visitor. That helps with server response time, the first part of loading. It does nothing about what happens next: the browser still has to download every image, font, stylesheet and script the page references, and run all that JavaScript on a phone. If your home page pulls in a slider library, a page builder's scripts, three font families and a chat widget, caching delivers that bundle a little sooner, but it is still the same heavy bundle.

Look at the opportunities list in PageSpeed Insights for clues. Large images that are not properly sized point to image work. Render-blocking resources and unused JavaScript or CSS point to the theme and plugins. A long main-thread time points to too many scripts running at once. Many optimisation plugins offer settings to delay or combine scripts, but turning everything on blindly can break menus, forms or the checkout, so each change needs testing on a staging copy, not on the live site during business hours.

Also check for conflicts. Running two caching plugins together, or a plugin alongside caching built into the host, often causes stale pages, broken layouts or no improvement at all. Pick one approach. If the site still drags after images are fixed and unnecessary plugins removed, the theme or page builder itself may be the limit, which is when a rebuild becomes worth discussing.
