What is UTM?
UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link so your own analytics can tell where each visitor came from. The common five are source (which site), medium (paid, organic, email, broadcast), campaign (which push), content (which specific ad or button) and term (which keyword). They are read by your analytics rather than by the ad platform, which is exactly why they are worth the trouble: they give you a second opinion that no platform can inflate. They cost nothing, they never expire, and once tagged, a link keeps reporting for as long as people keep clicking it.
What does UTM mean for a business in Pakistan?
You will end up running the same Reel three ways — organically, as a boosted post, and as a bio link — and without tags they collapse into one indistinguishable blob in your reports. Tag the bio link, tag every ad, tag the link you paste into a WhatsApp broadcast. Remember the tag dies at the handoff into a chat, so pair it with a code word for anything that ends in WhatsApp.
A worked example
A Blue Area co-working space tags three links and reads the month in analytics: 610 sessions from the Instagram bio produce 3 tour bookings, 1,240 paid sessions produce 19, and 88 sessions from a WhatsApp broadcast produce 12. The free channel converts at 13.6 percent against 1.5 percent for paid.
