Can I update WordPress plugins myself without breaking the site?
Yes, you can update WordPress plugins yourself if you take a full backup first, update one plugin at a time, and check key pages, forms and checkout after each. Major version updates and WooCommerce updates carry more risk. Testing on a staging copy first is the safest route for any site that brings in business.
The longer answer
Most plugin updates go smoothly, and skipping them is riskier than doing them, since many fix security problems. Trouble comes from doing everything at once. Clicking update all for twenty plugins, the theme and WordPress itself means that if the site breaks, you have no idea which change caused it. Instead, take a backup, then update plugins one by one, reloading the site and testing the parts that matter after each: the home page, the contact form, the WhatsApp button, and for a store, adding to cart and checkout.
Some updates deserve extra care. Major version changes, where the first number changes, can alter settings or remove features. WooCommerce and its extensions should be updated together and tested carefully, since a broken checkout costs sales immediately. Page builders and themes often have companion plugins that must match. Read the changelog for anything important before updating. Avoid updating late at night before a busy day, or during a sale or Eid rush, unless it is an urgent security fix.
A staging site, which is a private copy of your live site, removes most of the risk. Many hosts can create one with a click. Update and test there first, then repeat the same steps on the live site once satisfied. Also delete plugins you no longer use rather than leaving them inactive. If this sounds like more than you want to handle, our maintenance service does it monthly with backups and testing, included for sites we build under the Business bundle and quoted for other sites after an audit.
